MON 5/3: Film, Talk, Rock

I'm doubt you'll find much, if any, art for $10 or less at the MassArt Spring Sale where students and alumni are selling works in many types of media. Maybe you can find an original gift for Mom.

It's in the Tower Bldg Lobby between 10am and 7pm from today through SAT 5/8. ("Proceeds provide financial assistance for students.")

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 5/3

6pm
"On Broadway": Screening
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE

There are quite a few actors with local ties in this indie film that came out a few years ago such as Joey McIntyre, Eliza Dushku, Mike O'Malley, Amy Poehler, some minor Wahlbergs, etc. The story about a guy from Southie writing a play about his deceased uncle didn't take the country by storm. Many scenes were shot around town, so it definitely qualifies for the BPL's "Made in Mass" film series.

It does seem like a good way to entertain yourself for a couple hours outside of your possibly muggy apartment (with no potable water).

MON 5/3

7pm
"The Mount Everest of Scuba Diving: The Andrea Doria": Presentation
at Harborside Learning Lab, New England Aquarium, 1 Central Wharf, Boston (Waterfront)
FREE w/ RSVP

The Andrea Doria sank near Nantucket over 50 years ago, and it has become one of the most challenging dives. John Hanzl, the Aquarium's diving safety officer, will about his excursion to the site and likely diving in general.

Apparently there is a "learning lab" in the parking garage, and this is where free lectures are taking place on many Mondays and Tuesdays over the next couple months.

The program should last about an hour with a reception afterwards. It would be a good idea to register to ensure admission.

MON 5/3 (and TUES 5/4)

9pm
Larcenist, Burning Oak (5/3), Jeff Rowe (5/4)
at House of Blues Restaurant, 15 Lansdowne St, Boston (Kenmore Sq)
FREE / 21+

This is the kind of corporate citizenship that you'd like to see.

The House of Blues has transformed from tiny place in Harvard Square to about a dozens big clubs across the country. Despite a few road bumps at the new location since it's opened, they're offering a space for original bands to play where people are already likely to go. (This new venture is mainly due to the guy from Heads Up Boston also works at HofB.)

The best part is no cover charge for the restaurant off to the side of the main venue. I've noticed a few gigs here and there in this room. Beginning this month, there is free music almost every night.

There's a bunch of kickass songs when you have a band like Larcenist where there are 4 songwriters. Obviously, a lot of influences will be on the table, but the core has a heavy, rockin' Americana vibe. Two of the Larcenist guys are opening each night with their solo project.

MON 5/3

10pm
JJ & Thee Cuban Heels, The Downbeat 5, Port Charles Quintet
at Charlie's Kitchen, 10 Eliot St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5 / 21+

If you didn't get a chance to see The Downbeat 5 at Harvard May Fair yesterday, you've got another chance tonight. When you combine Jenny D's powerhouse voice and JJ Rassler's riff-tastitc perfection with the pounding rhythm section, it's some of the best high-octane rock blending punk and soul and a dash of Brill-Building pop.

While Jenny has been doing tremendous soul music with her Deelinquents, JJ has also delved deep into the record collection for the wild, R&B roots of garage-rock. Thee Cuban Heels should also hit some of JJ's excellent originals.

I don't think the Port Charles Quintet are a 5-piece at this point. They are a bunch of local rock stalwarts including the singer and drummer of one of my favorite classic Boston bands, The Prime Movers, for another garage-rock blast.
