Sneak Peek: FRI 10/15 to SUN 10/17

There is stuff on the calendar for Thursday, as well as Friday & Saturday, but a full post should be coming.

If you like drinking wine, there are a few tastings between today and Sunday at shops in Cambridge/Boston/Brookline where you can also buy tickets for next weekend's "Wine Riot" at a $5 discount (still more than $10, but a decent deal).

And If you're thinking about getting married or want jewelry, there's a chance to win a $20k diamond ring via a "treasure hunt" on Saturday afternoon.

Update: Hey, did you hear President Obama and James Taylor are appearing at a Deval Patrick rally at the Hynes Convention Center on Saturday (12:30pm). It's free...

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRI 10/15 to SUN 10/17

Friday: 4pm to 7pm

11am to 6pm
Annual Fort Point Open Studios
all around Fort Point (South Boston/Seaport)
FREE

It's the godfather of Boston Open Studios. Some of the artist studios are open on Friday, hundreds of artists open their doors on the weekend.

I like how the Open Studios graphic hops on the autumnal train and says "Pick Your Own Art".

FRI 10/15

7pm
Freddie Gibbs
at Concrete Jungle, 297 Newbury St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE / 15+

The up'n'coming rapper is appearing at the Middle East (Downstairs) later, but it looks like he'll be at this "pop-up retail store" before his gig.

FRI 10/15

8pm
The Chapin Sisters, Liz Longley, NEeMA
at Cafe 939, 939 Boylston St, Boston (Back Bay)
$10 advance / $12 door / All Ages

This is a whole lot of fine, folky, feminine singer-songwriters. I loved The Chapin Sisters' version of "Toxic" a few years ago and dug everything else I've heard. Leonard Cohen is a big fan of NEeMA and produced her album -- 'nuff said.

To buy advance tix with no service charge (I hope), go to the Berklee Performance Center box office between 10am and 6pm, either today or Friday.

FRI 10/15

9pm
Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3, Muck & The Mires, The Painted Lights, Eric Martin & the Illyrians
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
$10 / 21+

Steve Wynn (ex-The Dream Syndicate) will perform their 1984 album "The Medicine Show" in its entirety. There is a giant load of garage-rock before and after.

FRI 10/15

9:30pm
Club d'Elf, Otis Grove, Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 advance / $12 door / 21+

Someone left a comment about this gig last week, so I thought I'd give some love to Otis Grove's CD Release show. Get ready for funky-jazzy goodness.

SAT 10/16

10am to 5pm
Boston Book Festival
at Boston Public Library & other Copley Sq locations [PDF Map]

Lots of literary panels, readings, performances, and fun for the reader and writer alike. I like the idea of "Writer Idol" where people bring the first 250 words of their manuscript to be read aloud by an actor then critiqued.

I almost forgot to mention the $10 musical show at 7:30pm with musician/authors like Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses), Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Joe Pernice.
